Gavilan Joint Community College District Board of Trustees member Walter R. “Walt” Glines is running unopposed representing the Gilroy area for the November 2014 election.
As such, Glines’ said name does not appear on the ballot. Write-in candidacy opens Sept. 8 and runs through Sept. 21, according to the Santa Clara County Registrar’s Office.
Glines, vice-president of the board, is a longtime resident and Gilroy High School class of 1966 alumnus who worked for more than 40 years at local newspapers in various positions. He attended classes at the Hollister Municipal Airport before transferring to a four-year school, he said.
Voters elected Glines to his first term on the board four years ago.
“There are some big decisions in the near future for Gavilan,” Glines said.
Glines said Gavilan College is a community resource for more than students and that he wants to continue to be a part of making “a great place even better.”
“Gavilan College is a special place with a long history—more than 30 years,” Glines said.
Gavilan offers more than transfer courses to four-year schools including vocational classes in disciplines like aviation mechanics, policing, nursing and cosmetology, he said.
“Gavilan is in the forefront of a statewide effort to improve student academic success,” Glines said. “Last year we received another six-year accreditation.”
In the third district representing San Benito, incumbent Kent L. Child faces challengers, eductaor Elizabeth Dirks and retired university director Lois M. Locci. Incumbent Tony Ruiz will not be seeking re-election, according to past news reports. In area two representing Morgan Hill, small business owner Mark W.A. Hinkle is challenging incumbent Laura Perry.
The seven-member Gavilan Joint Community College District Board of Trustees sets district policy. Terms are four years. The extended deadline to file for candidacy ended Aug. 13.
Attend meetings
The public can attend board meetings the second Tuesday of the month with open session starting at 7 p.m. at Gavilan College student center, north/south lounge, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. in Gilroy.
