If Gilroy beats District 5 Arizona, who already has one loss, the girls clinch a berth in the Little League World Series in Kirkland Washington. However, if Arizona tops the hometown contingent, the teams square off in a winner-take-all showdown Wednesday night.
Gilroy made it through Pool B play unscathed, setting up Monday’s contest with Pool A top seed Queen’s Creek.
The game began Sunday evening but was suspended in the bottom of the fourth inning due to rain.
With Gilroy ahead 2-0, the game picked up where it left off Monday and the girls were able to hold on.
A RBI-double by Kristen Dennis, bringing in Holly Lam, followed by a RBI-single from Mackenzie Mitchell to plate Brittney Souza, put Gilroy up 2-0 after two innings.
When play resumed Monday, the girls scored twice more in the top of the fifth on RBIs from Adrianna Ortega and Cristyn Simpson.
After back-to-back singles from Mitchell and DeLaTorre in the top of the sixth, Maritza Rodriguez chased home Mitchell for the deciding run with a RBI-double.
Lam, with a 24-hour break, went the distance, striking out six to get the win.
