Gilroy – Apparently, Manny Gonzalez’s bad knee isn’t hurting his baseball swing.
The Gavilan first baseman had quite a day at the plate Tuesday, blasting a three-run homer and a grand slam in the Rams’ 12-8 win over Cañada College.
Gonzalez’s two blasts in the seventh and eighth innings were instrumental in breaking the Rams out of an offensive funk and stopping a six-game losing streak.
“It was nice to bust out offensively,” said Gavilan head coach Neal Andrade. “My club continues to battle and work hard for me.”
Outfielder Danny Reyes also homered for Gavilan, sending a two-run shot over the fence in the first inning to give the Rams an early two-run lead.
Down by one going into the bottom of the seventh, Gavilan rallied for five runs to take an 8-4 lead. Cañada scored two runs in each of the following innings, but the Rams’ four-run eighth inning kept the Colts at bay.
Todd Gimenez got the win on the mound.
Prior to Tuesday’s win, the Rams lost 6-1 to Hartnell College Saturday and 4-2 to San Jose City College Monday. Against Hartnell, B.J. Collom had two hits and one RBI. Gimenez (3 hits, 1 RBI) and Reyes (2 hits, 1 RBI) led Gavilan’s offense against San Jose City College.
The Rams are 10-15 overall and 5-10 in Coast Conference play. Gavilan travels to West Valley today and Chabot Saturday.
