The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:

CHEERS: For the Gilroy Police Department, and particularly the officers who stuck with a cold murder case for two years and, after a great deal of work, solved it. Due to the efforts of Det. Dan Zen and officers Jim Gillio and Jeff Guerin, Paul Zapata didn’t get away with murdering an innocent young man who was a student at Gilroy’s Center for Employment Training outside a Gilroy 7-Eleven store three years ago. It’s that kind of valiant, dogged police work that distinguishes a department and shapes its character. In addition, it’s exactly the kind of message that our community wants out on the street: “Commit a crime here, and we will pursue you until you’re tried and convicted.” Great work and thank you for taking a murderer off our streets.

JEERS: For all the bickering by the City Council over the naming of a street through the new development of the McCarthy Business Park. Mayor Al Pinheiro seems to be on the right track about giving the nod to history, but who’s really going to know that Cameron Boulevard is named after John Gilroy who changed his name from John Cameron … anyway, we’ve got a solution to all this. Gilroy (including John Cameron) appreciates the support and eagerness which the McCarthy family has demonstrated about the future of Gilroy. In fact, leaders should sit down with the family and discuss the possibility of having the arts center named after them. The “Joe McCarthy Arts Center” has a wonderful ring to it and we’d love nothing more than to be reporting repeatedly on all the great events happening at the “McCarthy Arts Center” in downtown Gilroy.

CHEERS: For the news that construction on the Gilroy Sports Park is about to begin. Many Gilroyans were concerned they wouldn’t be around to see it. The quicker we build lots of multi-use fields, the better off this community will be. Morgan Hill’s soccer complex isn’t anything to write home about and it packs the teams (and local motels and restaurants) in. Gilroy can do it better. Number the fields, light them and build a decent facility.

CHEERS: For an end to a long election season. We’re glad the presidential race did not become a protracted court battle that fueled further division in America.
