Dear Editor,

Recently, we held our opening day of training for over 100 young men and women, beginning their careers with the Gilroy Community Services Department. For many of them it is their first job. We spend months planning a week of training to prepare them to serve our youth in a wide variety of recreational programs.

My co-workers and I know that the keynote speaker can set the “tone” for the entire success of the summer. Pastor Malcolm McPhail of the New Hope Community Church met and exceeded our expectations. Malcolm serves as chaplin to our police and fire department, supports the work of our Gang Task Force and battled a life threatening disease.

All of us got to hear first hand what a wonderful and amazing man he is. He had our staff crying, laughing and caring. If each young person walks away with just a part of his message they will be better people serving our children this summer. Thank you, Pastor Malcolm McPhail for sharing with our staff how they can touch a young person’s life in just one summer. To our community, I invite you to listen to one of his sermons, whatever faith you are. Gilroy is very lucky to have a man like him caring and taking care of the people of Gilroy.
