The Gilroy Unified School District on Thursday announced layoffs and presented its second interim fiscal report to the Santa Clara County Office of Education, however pink slip particulars will not be publicly available for weeks.

“We cannot release the names until after the layoff hearing, which will likely be in early May,” wrote GUSD Superintendent Debbie Flores in an e-mail Wednesday.

Michelle Nelson, president of the Gilroy Teacher’s Association, explained the information is confidential until the hearing.

“All teachers who received a notice are entitled to a hearing,” she wrote in an e-mail Wednesday. “Normally, all that happens is that we check the district’s information – order on seniority list, etc.”

Currently GUSD is faced with two possible fiscal scenarios.

If temporary tax extensions pass in a special June election, the district must cut $2.8 million from its budget. For this scenario, GUSD has found a way to meet these cuts.

However if the temporary tax extensions don’t pass in the special June election, GUSD must cut $6.7 million from it’s budget.

The latter possibility has been dubbed “the worst-case” scenario. Board-approved strategies to meet these cuts – should the situation come to pass.
