GUSD, Union Begin Negotiations

Gilroy – The dialogue about what teachers should get paid and for what has begun between the Gilroy Unified School District staff and trustees and members of the Gilroy Federation of Teachers and Paraprofessionals and the Gilroy Teachers Association. The board approved the basic terms for both sides for talks with the association and approved the basic terms of the federation Thursday night. Trustees expect to approve their basic terms for negotiations with the federation Aug. 23.

‘The Daughters of Lear’ on Stage

San Juan Bautista – The 17 members of the Gavilan STAR program will perform “The Daughters of Lear,” their adaptation of Shakespeare’s “King Lear.” The actors, who have been practicing for four weeks through the community college’s summer theater camp, will perform Aug. 13 and 14 at 7:30pm in El Teatro Campesino, 705 Fourth St., San Juan Bautista. Tickets are available at the theater box office at $12 per adult, $10 per student or senior and $5 per child.

AARP Safe Driving Class Information

Gilroy – The nations first and largest classroom refresher course for motorists 50 and older will be held Aug. 18. Participants will familiarize themselves with driver safety and new laws.

Three-year DMV certificates will be awarded for discounts on own auto insurance upon completion of this one-day program. There are no tests in the course. Class materials and certified instructor are provided by AARP.

There is a minimal DMV certificate fee.

Gilroy – The American Red Cross is conducting two mobile blood drives in August. The first is from 1:30 to 6:30pm Thursday, at Community Church, 8455 Wren Ave. The second is from 10am to 3pm, Saturday, Aug. 18 at South Valley Church, 8095 Kelton Drive.

La Leche League Making a Move

Gilroy – Whether you breastfeed your baby six days, six weeks or six months, you’ll find La Leche League meetings supportive and informative.

La Leche League of Gilroy is moving to its new, permanent location at the Gilroy Library. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month at 10:30am in the meeting room at the library, 7387 Rosanna St.

Mothers with their nursing children and mothers-to-be are welcome.
