In a contest of two similar teams, the Hartnell men’s basketball team edged Gavilan 66-63 Wednesday night.

“That’s what talked about in the past couple days before the game,” said Gavilan coach Tito Addison. “That it was going to be two teams that can take their gameplan to floor and execute plays. They executed better. You could see what our gameplan was the last five minutes, but they did a good job of separating from us.”

The Rams (8-18, 2-4 conf.), who were down by 11 with three minutes to go, forced turnovers defensively and clawed their way back against Hartnell (8-13, 4-2 conf.). Vince Bautista, who had two of Gavilan’s six 3-pointers in the second half, was able to get a jump shot off in the final ten seconds that would have given Gavilan the lead. But it rimmed off, and Hartnell sank both free throws when Gavilan was forced to foul.

After being down 36-28 at the half, the Rams drew within 40-37 as Jessie LoBue had the hot hand. LoBue scored all 11 of his second-half points in the first 10 minutes.

“We waited too long to begin to start to play, Addison said. “They don’t play a full 40 minutes. It was good to have a taste of success at times, but for the most part it was pretty frustrating. It’s the little things like blocking out and taking care of the basketball.”

Gavilan will be at Cabrillo Saturday night to continue Coast Conference play.

Gavilan: LoBue 14, Benson 13, Vargas 7, McConnell 7, Williams 6, Bautista 6, Jones 5, Murrell 3, Wortham 2.
