City officials are mulling a $100,000 traffic study for Welburn Avenue in Gilroy.

Residents who want to have a greater say in city matters have a fresh opportunity, as several city boards, committees and commissions have openings for appointment that will become available Jan. 1.

The application deadline is Dec. 4 at 5 p.m. Interviews will take place with the City Council on at 6 p.m. Dec. 8 in City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St.

The Planning Commission has one four-year seat that will become available. The seven-member body reviews all planning applications that do not meet the criteria for consideration by the planning division manager and makes recommendations on comprehensive planning projects to the City Council. The commission meets the first Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at the City Hall council chambers.

The Arts and Culture Commission has two four-year seats available. The group advises the community services department and the City Council on matters related to cultural and artistic activities and cooperates with other governmental agencies and civic groups to encourage, promote and stimulate the growth of broad-based arts in the community. It also may assist the community services department by pursuing and soliciting funding support for arts programs and facilities development. It meets during the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council chambers.

The Library Commission has two four-year seats open. The group serves as an advisory and liaison body to the Gilroy City Council, city staff and the community librarian on matters concerning the Gilroy Library. It meets the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Library Conference Room at 7387 Rosanna Street.

The Parks and Recreation Commission has one open four-year seat. The commission advises the community services department and the City Council on public parks, urban forestry and recreation, and it cooperates with other governmental agencies and civic groups in advancing sound park and recreation planning and programming. It reviews all city street tree applications that do not meet the criteria for consideration by the operations division manager. It also makes recommendations to the City Council on parks and recreation master plans and related park planning projects. It meets the third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the City Council chambers.

The Personnel Commision has one available four-year seat. The group reviews job descriptions and classification recommendations for city positions. It occasionally conducts a comprehensive review of the city’s human resources rules and regulations. It meets the second Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in City Council chambers.

The Building Board of Appeals has two open four-year seats. The board meets as necessary to hear appeals from customers concerning the interpretation or decision by the Building, Life and Environmental Safety Division of Code.

The Physically Challenged Board of Appeals has one open four-year seat. The board reviews actions taken by the Building Life and Environmental Safety Division regarding public accommodations for the physically challenged. It meets on the second Tuesday of January, April, July and October and as needed at 9 a.m. in the Engineering Conference Room at City Hall.

The Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Board has one open four-year seat. The board takes action in bicycle and pedestrian improvements throughout the city. It is also responsible for overseeing the new City Bicycle/Pedestrian Trail program and the Bike/Pedestrian Transportation Plan. It meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the City Council chambers.

The Historic Heritage Committee has one opening for a two-year term. It acts as an advisory board to the City Council and Planning Commission on issues relating to the identification, protection, retention and preservation of historic sites and historic neighborhoods in Gilroy. It meets the third Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. in the City Council chambers.

The Public Art Committee has two openings for four-year terms. It advises the Arts and Culture Commission on public art. It is responsible for developing the Public Art Plan, ensuring the quality of artwork created under the plan and developing budgets and scope of projects. The committee meets the fourth Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council chambers. Committee applicants will be interviewed by the Arts and Culture Commission at 6 p.m. Dec. 4. Recommendation to appoint will be forwarded from this interview session onto the City Council for final appointment.
