The National Weather Service issued a heat warning for today, advising that individuals sensitive to heat stay indoors.

Temperatures are expected to shoot to 97 degrees today in Gilroy, according to the NWS. Tuesday is expected to be even hotter with a high of 99 degrees, and Wednesday is slated to top that with a high of 100 degrees. Thursday and Friday are expected to be similarly hot.

The elderly, the very young and the sick should remain inside because they might be more susceptible to the negative effects of the heat, according to the NWS. They should also drink lots of water. Friends and relatives should check in on these people, and residents should not leave young children or pets in cars.
