SALINAS – The Salinas Cowboys mixed a smothering defense with a meat grinder running game to defeat Everett Alvarez 34-12 in a non-league game at Jim Reavis Field.

Salinas now is 2-2 and winds up the non-league portion of its year Friday at the Pit against Monte Vista Christian. The decision left Alvarez at 0-4, facing a final league tune-up at unbeaten Gilroy on Friday.

Salinas’ Isaiah Nau rushed for a game-high 118 yards. Teammate Kelepi Nau scooped up a bouncing Alvarez fumble on the Eagles’ 8 and turned it into six points.

QB Jojo Velasquez Velasquez kept Alvarez in the hunt with 10 pass completions for 109 yards.

North County 14, Live Oak 12

PRUNEDALE – The NMC Condors tuned up for their showdown with Palma on Friday by holding off the winless Acorns to improve to 4-0.

North County fell behind 6-0 and 12-7 before a 25-yard touchdown pass from Nick Liedel to Alex Doucet in the fourth quarter gave it the lead to stay.

North County meets Palma Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Salinas Sports Complex.

North Salinas 31, Alisal 30

SALINAS – A dew-dampened ball may have been the margin of difference Friday night as North Salinas held on to defeat Alisal, 31-30, at Salinas High’s Pit.

North High’s Ronnie Drummer rush for 258 yards and three touchdowns. Alisal’s Ibrahim Garfey and David Carriedo combine for 301 yards rushing, with Garfey scoring three times himself.

After a Garfety TD with 2;17 to play and an Alisal extra point try to tie, North High’s Merben Woo wrapped up the kicker and preserved the victory.

Hollister 14, Seaside 0

SEASIDE – The Hollister Haybalers handed the host Spartans their first loss of the season, 14-0.

Hollister’s Anthony Vasquez picked off a Gabriel Cruz-Gonzales pass and ran it back untouched 20 yards for six points and Martin Chapa’s kick made it 7-0 with 1:05 left in the first half.

The Spartans are 3-1; Hollister improved to 2-1-1.

The Balers opened the third quarter with a nine-play, 59-yard drive topped off by quarterback Karson Klauer’s 1-yard scoring dive. Nick Bailey’s 46-yard run set the table. Bailey finished with 87 yards on 13 carries, and Gabe Gaitan carried nine times for 52 yards.

Seaside’s Keawe Block rushed for 72 yards on eight carries. Cruz-Gonzales completed six of 17 passes for 84 yards.

Palma 35, Monterey 0

MONTEREY – Palma quarterback Chad Bozzo scored four first-half rushing touchdowns in a rout over host Monterey.

Three of Bozzo’s touchdowns – which came from 8, 15, 27 and 57 yards out – came without anyone touching him, except for teammates in the end zone. Bozzo finished with 129 yards on seven carries.

The Gilroy Dispatch and Salinas Californian are working cooperatively to supply area coverage of high school football.
