Recology South Valley is having a Compost Giveaway for Morgan Hill Residents. Recology transform food scraps, yard debris, and other biodegradable material into compost as part of their mission to reduces waste and help improve the environment. Bring your own shovel and container and get up to one half cubic yard, about two 32- gallon cans, per resident on Saturday, May 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Community Park of Edmundson Ave. For more details call (408) 776-7333 or email

Save the creeks

Groups and individuals are invited to come out on National River Cleanup Day and be a part of the solution to local water pollution. Drinking water and wildlife are greatly affected by pollution that collects in local rivers and creeks. Volunteers are greatly needed to help improve the health of West Little Llagas and Edmundson. Gloves, bags and litter grabbers will be provided. Participants under 18 will need to bring a volunteer waiver signed by their parents. Bring the family or friends and meet up on Saturday, May 21 from 9 a.m. to Noon at Corporation Yard, 100 Edes Court, Morgan Hill. Singles BBQ

Meet other Bay Area singles at the South Valley Community Church 19th Annual Singles Memorial Day Barbeque. Have a great day hanging out at the pool or get into a game of volleyball or basketball. Be prepared for a great meal provide by award winning Cecil’s Smok’n BBQ. They’ll be serving tri tip and chicken with caesar and potato salad, beans, corn on the cob, dessert. Non-alcohol beverages will be available. Work off that meal by dancing to the Eight Second Ride band. Single adults are invited on Monday, May 30 from noon to 6 p.m. at 90 Denio Ave., in Gilroy. Memorial Day festival

Gilroyresidents will be out in full force to celebrate, remember and honor fallen heroes at Gilroy’s Memorial Day Event. The day includes a Remembrance Ceremony at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park followed by a traditional Parade down Tenth Street starting at Monterey Street and all culminating at Christmas Hill Park for a car show and family fun time. Come out and enjoy live music by the Mike Osborn Band. There will be free activities for the kids such as jump houses, rock wall and more. Visit one of the food trucks and have lunch on the lawn. Start the day on Monday, May 30 at 9 a.m. for the ceremony. The parade begins at 11 a.m. Family fun time at the park will go until 4 p.m. For more information visit gilroycommunity.org.

Summer music
Gilroy and Morgan Hill are gearing up to bring in local talent for free Friday Night music. Both venues bring in food, wine and beer for purchase. Proceeds go towards funding this and future community events. It’s a great time to gather with friends or give the kids a night out so pack up the chairs or blankets and get ready to rock. Morgan Hill’s series is from June 2 through August 28 from 6-9pm at the Community and Cultural Center. Find out who’s playing at morganhill.org.
