Gilroy – The residential corridor between First and Tenth Streets, west of Monterey Street, will get its first traffic signal this summer in anticipation of a new housing development.

The traffic light will replace the four-way stop sign at Third Street and Wren Avenue.

City Transportation Engineer Don Dey said the upgrade was “triggered” by expected increases in traffic from Oak Commons, a community of 134 single-family homes going up off Wren Avenue, just behind Blockbuster.

Installation of the overhead signal will begin in June, after schools let out, and is planned for completion by the time students return to school in August.

As part of the upgrade, the city will remove the intersection’s triangular islands, which separate through-traffic from the cars turning right.

The residential area south of First Street currently has a flashing stop light at the intersection of Third Street and Miller Avenue, with other intersections in the area controlled by two- and four-way stop signs.

Dey said the area could see more traffic signals in the future, depending on the pace of future development.
