The weekend of Nov. 21 to 23 will see many people from around the country travelling to Ft. Benning, Georgia calling for the closure of the School of the Americas (SOA).

The SOA, renamed a few years ago to WHISC, is a combat training school for Latin American soldiers.

The demonstrations at the SOA this weekend commenorate the anniversary of the deaths of six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her daughter who were killed by SOA graduates.

The campaign to close the school has grown each year as a broad movement of human rights groups, people of faith, students, veterans, unionists, and others maintain that the underlying purpose of the school remains the same: To control the economic and political systems of Latin America by aiding and influencing Latin American militaries.

The continued functioning of the SOA is a manifestation of our hypocritical foreign policy that condemns terror while at the same time training soldiers to coerce and dominate the civilian populations of their own countries.

If we want lasting peace and security we need a foreign policy that reflects our values of justice, democracy and dignity.
