Gilroy – It was imminent that Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero’s knock out of No. 3 World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight Gamaliel Diaz in their June 23 rematch would open doors to a title fight.

Though not yet official, it looks like Guerrero, who has moved up the WBC rankings to No. 2 since the Diaz fight, might get that chance next month.

Guerrero has been slated for the Sept. 2 Showtime Championship Boxing telecast of the World Boxing Council (WBC) World Heavyweight Title Eliminator between three-time world champ and second-ranked James Toney and third-ranked Sam Peter. The fight will take place in Los Angeles at the Staples Center.

However, the exact details of the fight are still being worked out, said Guerrero’s publicist Mario Serrano Friday.

It is rumored that Guerrero (18-1-1, 11 KOs) will take on International Boxing Federation (IBF) 126-pound champion Eric Aiken (16-4, 12 KOs) for the IBF world title. But Serrano said the Guerrero camp was still ironing things out.

“This is not yet final,” Serrano said. “So we’re waiting.”

The Guerrero/Aiken matchup is what Goossen-Tutor promoter Dan Goossen speculated would be next for the Gilroy fighter the night he knocked out Diaz in the sixth round in Oakland.

“It’s the IBF champ who we’re going to go after, maybe in September,” Goossen said June 23.

Going for the IBF title is a different goal from what Guerrero and some of his representatives expected to be the next step after Diaz.

“We’re pretty sure Robert is going to fight (Takashi) Koshimoto for the (WBC featherweight) title, (but) you never know,” Guerrero’s manager Bob Santos told the Dispatch in a July 1 story. “It’s dependent on the WBC, the promoters and what can be put together. …Either way, he’s either fighting for the (WBC) title or he’s fighting (WBC No.1 ranked featherweight) Nicky Cook.”
