Born in Mexico on Jan. 25, 1950, Mr. Zapien joined the Army early in life and earned medals for National Defense Service and sharpshooting.

He later became a deputy sheriff for the Santa Clara Sheriff’s Department, serving for 20 years. He received a medal of honor for being wounded in the line of duty.

He was a loving father who was very family oriented and giving to others. He was proud of his children and their accomplishments.

He loved to fish, ride his motorcycle and spend time with friends. He will be truly missed.

He is survived by his beloved parents, Alicia and Genaro Carpio of San Jose; his devoted children, Michael Zapien of Oakland, James Zapien of Illinois, Joshua Zapien of Gilroy, Jacqueline Zapien of San Jose and Kristopher Zapien of San Jose; his cherished siblings, Mary Contreras of Hanford, Gloria Rivera of Corona, Arthur Carpio of Mesa, Javier Carpio of San Jose, Genaro Carpio of Los Banos and Patricia Carpio of San Jose; and three grandchildren, Joshua, Eric and Alexander.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 5pm Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005 at Grissom’s Chapel and Mortuary, 267 E. Lewelling Blvd., San Lorenzo.

A funeral service will be held at 2pm Sunday at the chapel. He will be laid to rest with military honors at 10:30am Monday, Jan. 3, 2005 at 10:30am at San Joaquin National Cemetery in Gustine.
