Hello, everyone. I am the new guy.
Allow me to introduce myself. As you can read underneath my huge mug shot, my name is Josh. Easy transition from the guy I’m replacing, I know. I’ve been called the “new Josh” for the past two weeks.
I feel as if I was just promoted after years of playing in the minors. Don’t worry; I average well over the norm.
One of the more memorable times in my life was when I played high school baseball. I still remember the smell of the grass and dirt. And every once in a while, usually in mid-March, a light breeze will pick up that carries with it the scent of spring practice.
I learned a lot about how far I could push myself to achieve a goal during my playing days. The satisfaction of accomplishing what I had set out to do was often times more rewarding than the actual end result.
The friendships, the hard work, the commitment and the competition associated with those four years have left a lasting effect on my life.
My prep career solidified a passion for sports that began as soon as I could throw a ball. Although it has been a number of years since I laced up my spikes, the passion I have for sports has now translated into my new profession.
I have spent the last year as a freelance writer covering high school sports in the Bay Area. I covered everything from girls tennis to championship basketball games and everything in between.
If I still get butterflies before a game I can only imagine how the kids must feel.
Realizing there was a large market for high school sports stories, I helped create a Web site aimed at providing quality sports coverage for the local high school athlete. I truly enjoyed what I was doing.
Over the past two weeks as I was “broken into the business” by out-going sports editor Josh Koehn, I have met a lot of people that have the same passion for sports.
Whether it’s for Gilroy High and Christopher High football, or the perennially dominant GHS field hockey team, or a die-hard fan of the ‘Ghost’, I like the idea of being surrounded by a community that has adoration for its local athletes.
I am determined to give you quality articles; stories that I want you to enjoy reading and to feel the excitement I felt while writing it.
There are so many positives that stem from sports, which must be the focus. I want to relay the joy all of the high school athletes, as well as the youth-sport and recreational athletes, portray while playing the sports they love.
The work will be rigorous, I know that. I have tackled laps on rainy January days and survived. I have battled back from injury, and I have been to the top and fallen again.
This job will challenge me beyond any scenario I have faced.
But if I have knocked down barriers before, I can do it again. And I want you, the reader, along for the ride.
