John Gurich

His all-American wrestling skills may have put him on the map, but John Gurich’s first sport was hockey.
While in elementary school, Gurich joined Gilroy’s first roller hockey team. Later, he moved onto the ice to play for the San Jose Blades, or “junior Sharks.”
Gurich is now a three-sport athlete, also participating in golf and becoming Gilroy’s first all-American wrestler. He was a two-time state placer for the Gilroy grapplers. But in his recreational sports, Gurich prefers the water.
“I like to surf,” he said. “I go surfing as much as I can, which isn’t that often. I like to wakeboard, water-ski.”
Gurich also spends time improving car stereo systems with his friends. Several people off the street, hearing Gurich’s work, have asked him to fit their cars with his unique subwoofer.
With his own ’73 BMW, Gurich spends more time under the hood than he does on the sound system.
“It’s an old one, it takes a lot of maintenance to keep it up,” he said.
Gurich heads to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo this fall but hasn’t decided if he’s going to study business, kinesiology or physical education. Either way, he probably won’t continue wrestling so he can focus on academics.
