GILROY – The GHS boys junior varsity basketball team finished
its 2009-10 season with a 22-2 record. The Mustangs finished in
first place in the rugged Tri-County Athletic League with an 11-1
record. The JV’s also won three pre-conference tournament
championships, including the prestigious Bob Hagen Memorial.
GILROY – The GHS boys junior varsity basketball team finished its 2009-10 season with a 22-2 record. The Mustangs finished in first place in the rugged Tri-County Athletic League with an 11-1 record. The JV’s also won three pre-conference tournament championships, including the prestigious Bob Hagen Memorial.
The team’s scoring leaders were Ryan Valentino-Pickett and Dietrich Baumgartner at 8.4 and 8.3 points per game, respectively. Baumgartner also led the team in rebounding with 8.6 boards per game. Robby Filice followed very closely with 7.2 rebounds per game, and led the team in blocked shots with 18. Nick Chang led the young Mustangs in assists at 4.7 per game.
Head coach Jay Baksa said the team exceeded all expectations.
“This team’s improvement from the first day was tremendous,” he said. “They worked extremely hard and it was a real pleasure to work these fine young men”.
Joinging Baumgartner, Valentino-Pickett, Chang and Filice on this year’s roster were, Troy Charvet, Niko Fortino, Steven Hebert, John Lester, Stefan Mercer, Alex Siao, Brad Sigl, Greg Spellman, Kyle Stannard and Charles Walker.
Assisting coach Baksa were Craig Martin and John Kent.
