CALLER 1: This is in response to the JV football team and lack of coverage. You put the score in but that was all. If you are going to cover all teams, cover them equally. The JV team is a special team. When they get to the varsity level, they will be in CCS playoffs and league champions, if not next year then the year after. I hope you enjoy covering the varsity this year because it’s not going to be too promising a season.
GREEN PHONE: This was obviously in response to our response last week. This week, the caller did identify himself so it is a lot easier for us to respond. First, you did not indicate in last week’s call what sport you were talking about so we weren’t sure how to respond (one reason why we ask for names and phone numbers with the promise we won’t run caller’s name and phone number).
To address your concerns, it is the policy at the Dispatch to cover varsity sports more than junior varsity sports. As you pointed out yourself, this junior varsity team has the potential to be special. When those players are varsity, they will get the brunt of the coverage and I am sure we will have to answer other queries from parents who want JV and freshmen covered more like varsity. Newspaper sports sections have limited space, and so they have to make a choice, and usually they opt to give varsity teams most of the coverage. In addition to running JV scores on the bottom of our varsity football stories, we also have a weekly story reviewing junior varsity action from the previous week.
