To the Gilroy High School athletes, the season coming to an end means picking things up and doing everything possible to finish on a positive note.
Both the junior varsity and freshman girls’ teams did just that during their final home game, Tuesday, against Salinas. The JVs were dominant, lassoing the Cowboys 53-23. The decisive win gave the Mustangs their 12th win of the season, led by Carmen Pichardo’s 18 points. Jennifer Rose added eight points.
The freshmen bumped their record to 16-2 with a 35-24 win. Lindsey Foster had a team-high nine points. Laura Steele had seven rebounds and six points. Angel Senior had six rebounds to go with her eight points, and Kristin Costa had a team-high seven steals and was named player of the game.
The freshmen boys basketball, on the other hand, were defeated by Salinas.
The JV boys basketball team lost 59-51 to Salinas. The Mustangs, led by 14 points by Jamie Jensen and 12 each from Ryan Costa and Justin Wheat, trailed 33-20 at the half.
The JV girls finished their season with a heartbreaking 40-39 loss at Alisal. After falling behind at halftime, the Trojans fought back and by the beginning of the fourth quarter were up by five points. Despite Gilroy catching up and fighting back, the Trojans were able to hold for the win. The JV girls finished their season with a 12-7 record. Breanna Mah came up big in the finale with 19 points. Following Mah was Jennifer Rose with eight.
The freshman girls basketball team finished its season with a 33-22 win over Alisal. Costa had all six of her points in the first three minutes of the game. Lindsey Foster had five points, and Emily Loera, Laura Steele, Geralyn Moon and Angel Senior all had four points to round out the balanced scoring.
Co-captains Foster and Costa had strong emotions and a lot to say about their team, which finished a stellar 17-2 campaign under co-coaches Melissa and Ben Noto.
“This season we started off as individuals,” Foster said. “Then we stepped up our game and became a family. What made us this family was passion and perseverance. In order to have passion, you need heart and in order to have perseverance you need intensity, fire and a drive to make you want to give everything that you got.”
Added Costa, “It was what a basketball season should be like – coaches that believe in us, a team made into a family, victories, losses, working hard and some old fashioned fun. Each girl had her unique personality and style of playing ball that combined us into the team we were.”
