Gilroy – The junior varsity football team had a bye last Friday night but the freshman team played the evening before in Monterey. They were overpowered by th Toreadores 18-6. Jonathan Owens made the only touchdown for Gilroy High in that game.

The girls JV field hockey fared well in a game Monday against Carmel High School, registering a 6-0 shutout. Junior Deena Morsilli was top scorer with three goals. Behind her was freshman Mandi Jo Torres with two goals and sophomore Danielle Zappa with one goal.

The JV volleyball team played well against Everett Alvarez, emerging with a 25-19, 25-23. That came on the heels of a hard-fought loss to San Benito, which won 25-15, 16-25, 15-12.

“A big problem was being far behind but this time if we were down we were only down two points,” said assistant coach Matt Largo. “Overall they just need to work on communication.”

The freshman volleyball team also won in two games over Alvarez, 25-18, 25-17, after losing to San Benito 27-25, 25-16.

“Megan Toler and Carmen Picardo are our top servers. They made most points. In one game they made 10 or 11 points in 12 serves,” said head coach Antoinette Bowe. “All the girls have made improvements in their own ways.”

Next up for the GHS junior varsity and freshman volleyball teams are home games Tuesday with Notre Dame.

“Notre Dame is a really tough team; this next game will be difficult,” said Bowe. “As long as we play hard, we should be okay. Hopefully we will have a good day and they will have an off day.”

The JV water polo team had games cancelled this week, but it did play last Thursday against Robert Louis Stevenson High School. Gilroy High School was defeated 7-5. Sophomore Kaitlin Muroaka was the top scorer for the Mustangs with two goals. Alex Marshall also scored a goal.
