opening round of the Bob Hagen Memorial Tournament when it defeated
St. Francis-Watsonville 52-48.

The JV boys’ basketball team ran its win streak to six in the opening round of the Bob Hagen Memorial Tournament when it defeated St. Francis-Watsonville 52-48.
Kendrick Azcueta led the Mustangs (6-1) with 14 points. Stephen Galtman had 12 points and eight rebounds, Jamie Jensen had 10 points and six rebounds, and Justin Wheat had eight points.
Gilroy defeated Oak Grove 45-33 Tuesday. Azcueta led with 18 points, Jensen had 10 points and six rebounds, and Galtman, who had 20 points last week, had 10 rebounds against the Eagles.
The freshman basketball team also posted a win at Oak Grove, defeating the Eagles 48-32.
Gilroy’s freshman girls’ basketball team won the Aptos Tournament, sweeping three games. The Mustangs’ Lindsey Foster was Most Valuable Player. Alana Osaki and Angel Senior were named to the all-tourney team.
In the opener, Gilroy (6-0) turned a four-point halftime deficit into a 25-18 win over Notre Dame-Salinas. Geralyn Moon and Foster combined for 13 Mustang points. Gilroy also had to come from behind in the second game, overcoming a three-point halftime deficit to beat Salinas 34-18. Foster was the leading scorer with 12 points. Foster’s 16 points and five steals led the Mustangs to a 37-25 win over Aptos in the championship game. Senior had seven points and 12 rebounds.
“I am very proud of the team,” GHS coach Melissa Noto said. “We work very hard in practice, and we’re constantly pushing ourselves.”
Gilroy’s boys junior varsity soccer team lost to Alvarez High School on Wednesday in its Tri-County Athletic League opener. Christian Sanchez was the only one to score for the Mustangs in a 4-1 defeat.
The JV girls soccer team (2-4-1 overall, 2-0 TCAL) scored a 2-0 win Thursday at San Benito. Mayra Almanza had both goals for the Mustangs.
The wrestling team competed in the TAZ Frosh/Soph Tournament last weekend at Overfelt.
In a format that pitted freshmen against freshmen and sophomores against sophomores, GHS ninth graders Luis Barragan, heavyweight; Nick Ahmadkhani, 112; and Adam Rosso, 135, took firsts, and Martin Espinosa, 119, was third.
Barragan also won titles at the Harbor and Novice tournaments. Ahmadkhani was a winner at the Novice tournament. The Mustangs were 3-1 in the Sobrato JV Duels, defeating Santa Clara, Pioneer and Los Gatos, and losing to the host Bulldogs.
“So far, so good,” said JV wrestling coach Marty Serrano. “We’ve had good experiences, good desire to want to win and to improve.”
The wrestling team competes this weekend in the Santa Cruz Coast Classics tournament.
“JV has a lot of potential,” said JV captain Tim Caspary. “If we work hard enough we can go far.”
