It was a Sweep for GHS Mustangs Friday night against Salinas
Gilroy – On homecoming weekend, the Junior Varsity Mustang football team finally ended their three game losing streak by defeating the North Salinas Vikings 20-14.

The coaching staff acknowledged that its team had not been playing a complete game during the past few weeks. Head Coach Jack Daley was pleased with his team’s turnaround.

“Tonight was the first time this season that we played a four-quarter football game,” he admitted. “We were aggressive the whole night and showed how capable we are.”

The Mustangs first score came on a 4 yard run by tailback Travis Reyes. Throughout the season Reyes has been one of the stable forces for the Mustangs and has showed signs that he will be successful at the Varsity level in the future. Fellow tailback Steven Gutierrez added an impressive run of his own by scoring on a play in the second quarter. The ‘Stangs final score of the night came when Quarterback Steven Martinez found Tony Travis in the back of the end zone. This gave the ‘Stangs a lead they would not relinquish.

The homecoming victory moved the Mustangs to a record of 5-3 for the season. Coach Daley explained about how important this victory was for his team going into the final two games.

“Momentum is everything, and tonight we got it back. We have Salinas next week and hopefully we will show up to that game as prepared as we were tonight.”

Although the Salinas Cowboys foster a roster with athletic and explosive players, Daley believes that his team can still prevail. “If we do the little things and play a complete football game we will be come out victorious. Hopefully we can do just that.”
