Dear Editor:
I am responding to Alan Viarengo’s many letters to the Dispatch opinion page – particularly his letter dated April 15, 2006. In it he stated he saw a group of people on the corner of 10th and Monterey streets protesting a recent issue. I, myself, detest protesting because many times it leads to violence.
I do agree some of his comments made a valid point, but I find it offensive that he should refer to anyone as scum because of personal opinion. Afterall, this is a free country, protected by the Constitution and if they want to protest, so be it. They are people created (as you are) by God, and such shameful names should not be used.
Alan, I have lived in good ‘ol’ Gilroy for 90 years. I knew your grandparents – hard-working, good honest people. I knew your Uncle Frank (who married my first cousin) a most genuine gentleman. I knew your father Aldo, a decorated WWII veteran and a great person, and your mother, a wonderful lady.
I cannot therefore, understand what the dickens happened to you. Let me, an old guy, give you some advice: Do not continue to insult people by writing senseless, offensive letters, and most of all, do not embarrass your family. Never forget, our own parents and grandparents were one immigrants to this great country too.
Tolerance and peace are the keys to making this world a better place to live.
Bill Filice, Gilroy
