Guillermo Saputo (10-0, 7 KOs), a powerful native of Santa Fe, Argentina, began boxing at the age of 13. After a stellar amateur career including two Olympic appearances, Saputo relocated to the United States, where he made his professional boxing debut in 2001. Since then, boxing insiders have marveled at this rugged 26-year-old who has assembled an unblemished record in ten professional fights. Â
Candy Robertson (14-6, 10 KOs), a native of Portland, Oregon and Saputo’s toughest opponent to date, has made a name for himself with his ‘never say die’ attitude and eagerness to go to war in every bout. His style has made for some crowd-pleasing battles over his six-year career, including matches with world ranked contenders such as Carlos Bojorquez, Michael Lerma, and Robert Frazier. In his last bout, on July 11, Robertson earned a decision win over Armando Velardez in a ten round bout. Â
In the Miller Lite Fight Night at The Tank co-main event, Gilroy’s Kelsey Jeffries (22-8, 1 KO) will put her IFBA World Featherweight Title on the line against her toughest opponent to date, Kelli Cofer (10-1-3, 3 KO’s) of Willard, OH.Â
In just four short years in the sport, Jeffries, a great granddaughter of legendary heavyweight champion James J. Jeffries, has lived up to her nickname ‘Road Warrior’, having fought an amazing 30 times in her career. A decorated boxer with three pro titles to her name, Jeffries won the IFBA crown in November of 2002 with a ten round decision over Layla McCarter. This is her second title defense.
A 25-year-old southpaw, Cofer began her boxing career in 2000, but fought sparingly until 2002, when she went unbeaten in five bouts. She has added two more victories to her record this year, and on November 6, she will look to fulfill a dream by capturing Jeffries’ world title.
Also on the card, unbeaten prospect Arturo Quintero (7-0, 4 KOs) will face Mexicali’s Julio Leal (6-4, 2 KOs) in a six round junior lightweight bout. A native of San Jose, Quintero went the distance in three of his first four pro bouts, but has recently shown power with knockouts in his last three matches, making him a fan favorite at ‘The Tank’.
Another fighter who has made his mark both in and out of the boxing ring is San Jose’s Gary Owens (1-0-0, 1 KO). In July, Owens, a world-renowned kick boxer and a former IKF US International Rules Champion, made his pro boxing debut at Miller Lite Fight Night at the Tank with a rousing third round stoppage of Carlos Espinoza. An opponent for Owens will be named shortly.
Golden Boy Promotions, owned by six-time world boxing champion Oscar de la Hoya, has scheduled more than 30 fights throughout California in 2003 alone. For more information on Golden Boy Promotions visit www.goldenboypromotions.com.
