SAN JOSE – Los Angeles scrambled back into the Western Conference First Round Monday night when Tanner Pearson scored 3:47 into overtime to top the San Jose Sharks 2-1.
Trailing 2-0 after a pair of one-goal losses at Staples Center, the Kings turned back the San Jose offensive threat in the final 59:30 of regulation before the 23-year-old Pearson lined a low shot from the left circle past San Jose goaltender Martin Jones for the game-winner.
Game Four is scheduled for 7:30pm Wednesday at SAP Center.
The teams fashioned a 1-1 deadlock with 8:10 gone in the first period, then concentrated on defense for most of the 51 minutes to force overtime.
Los Angeles was able to score once in regulation by converting one of three power play opportunities.
San Jose was down one skater 7:50 into the first period when Tommy Wingels was called for holding Drew Doughty. The Kings needed 20 seconds to score. Defenseman Jake Muzzin controlled the puck while advancing toward the San Jose net. Muzzin passed to Milan Lucic at the left post and the power forward slid the puck to Anze Kopitar for the jam shot inside the right post.
The Sharks opened the game in strong fashion, taking a total of 30 seconds to take a 1-0 lead. Joe Thornton skated from the right boards and atop the right circle before snapping a shot inside the right post past goaltender Jonathan Quick. Thornton’s 25th career playoff goal was assisted by Tomas Hertl.
San Jose was unable to score on five power plays for the night. Los Angeles, after producing 13 shots on net in the first period, was limited to nine shots over the second and third periods.
