A parent problem
Parents who drop off children at the preschool on Ninth Street along with the Gateway Center have to stop just stopping in the middle of the road, putting on their hazard lights and getting out of the car to get their children out! This holds up traffic from both directions coming from Princevalle and Hanna streets. Ninth Street is small as it is. This makes it very difficult to get through. Parents please find a parking spot and get off in a safe area and walk your children.
Red Phone:
Dear Delayed Driver:
You are so right. And you’re not the only one annoyed by the lazy parents who practice this method of dropping off their children. Other drivers are annoyed, other parents are annoyed. And now, Red Phone is annoyed! The preschool staff has sent home reminder after reminder telling parents about the ongoing problem, and police have been out to issue tickets. Still, the problem continues. Red phone staked out the area and found a few repeat offenders. Their kids are cute. But, the parents are being disrespectful of fellow commuters. It seems it’s out of the question for these folks to find a parking spot, turn off the vehicle, walk their children into preschool, and then return to their parked car. If it continues to be too much for you parents, you can expect to remove clips of this very Red Phone from your wipers when you leave your car in everybody’s way.
in with the new?
Something I’ve been meaning to ask for a while – what’s to become of the old police station now that the new building is occupied?
Red Phone:
Dear Curious Caller:
Fire administration and the city’s Community Services department will eventually move into the building, but it’s going to take some time. The city has hired an architect to take a look at the space and see what changes need to be made before the two departments can move in.
“The old PD has jails and some other things we might not need in recreation,” joked Community Services Director Susan Andrade-Wax. The earliest the departments might move in is fall 2008, Andrade-Wax said.
a rooted question
What kind of trees were planted as part of the downtown renovation? They look like gum trees. Will they be lifting the sidewalk in about 10 or 15 years?
Red Phone:
Dear Gummy:
Red Phone called Charlie Krueger, resident engineer, who said the city consulted an arborist before planting the trees to reduce the chance of splitting sidewalks in the next few decades. Though there is the potential for any kind of tree to lift the walk after a long period of time, the colombia sycamore and crape myrtle trees that were planted are ones the arborist believes will not cause such a problem. These trees should be standing tall along our streets for quite some time.
