SAN JOSE – The Gilroy High baseball team was entangled in a 1-1 tie with host Leland in Wednesday’s non-league game – which will be rematched Thursday on the Mustang diamond at 3 p.m.
But the locals crumbled late with a few mishaps in the field – costing them the game in 4-1 road loss.
Sophomore starter Peter Mickartz held strong – striking out four, while walking six batters. Senior left-hander Todd Gimenez entered the game in the latter part of the sixth, but could not get the Mustangs out of a jam.
Junior catcher Ben Hemeon belted a double and Gimenez had a pair of base knocks. Senior second baseman Eric Gonzalez’s sacrifice bunt scored the Mustangs’ only run.
In addition, senior centerfielder Ron Colmon and senior Ruben Chavez both banged out base hits.
