Dear Editor,

This is in response to Marc Perkel’s letter about teachers with tenure not being able to be fired. Mr. Perkel, you will be very happy to know that tenured teachers may be released for unsatisfactory evaluations. Every year or two, permanent teachers are evaluated by an administrator.

If that teacher receives an unsatisfactory evaluation, the teacher is assigned a program improvement plan (PIP). This teacher works with a teacher mentor from the District who assists him/her to improve in the areas that were unsatisfactory.

A teacher is given up to two years to improve and then dismissed if no improvement has been shown. Usually when a teacher gets into this position, the teacher quits before the two years are up. So you see, education is trying to do what is best for the students. Hopefully, we can regain your support.
