Dear Editor,
After reviewing your latest News Poll (Should the city of Gilroy adopt a policy that forbids the hiring of anyone who has already retired from a public agency?), I did a little checking.
This paper has had a long-standing issue with Gilroy hiring employees that have retired from other agencies, receiving a pension from that agency and are now receiving a salary from the city. Other then saying that you are against it, I have never heard your rationale for it.
I’m sure you remember that when Ronald Reagan was president and collecting his presidential salary, he was at the same time collecting his California state pension? Based on your dislike of city employees receiving a pension from another agency and also working for the city at the same time, should we believe then that we were all wrong for electing Reagan president solely based on the fact that he was already receiving a government pension and continued to work in a government position, receiving a government salary?
