He’s Got it All Wrong … LAFCO Policy Will Keep American Food on the Table
Dear Editor,
Mark Zappa has it all wrong again. While property owners may not be trying to preserve ag land, voters are! They’ve done this through their elected representatives and resultant Cortese-Knox-Herzberg Act of 2000.
This law provides for mitigating the loss of at least some of our valuable agricultural land by purchase of conservation easements or other ag land.
Nothing prevents any landowner from selling his land at any time, but the free market rules prices. Annexation to any city requires proving to LAFCO that the land is needed because there is not already enough land within city limits. If the needed land is ag land, the CKH Act requires the loss to be mitigated. LAFCO’s revised policies will set the mitigation standard for all cities in Santa Clara County, including San Jose in the
Coyote Valley.
Our farmers deserve more economic support from all of us for the important benefits they provide. I don’t want to depend on foreign countries for my food!

Support for the Homeless Via Survival Kits Very Much Appreciated
Dear Editor,
I would like to thank the Gilroy community for their overwhelming response to the Homeless Survival Kit collection and distribution program. Through the generous giving of corporations and individuals, we raised over $10,000 to help more than 200 homeless people in our community with the basic necessities to help them survive the harsh winter months.
Kits consisting of backpacks, gloves, socks, winter coats and more were handed out at the Armory, St. Joseph’s, the Lord’s Table and other outreach events. I’m proud to be part of such a caring, compassionate community.
Thanks to the following companies
and individuals for their generous gifts: Cal Door, Ed Rossi, Glen Loma Group, Tim Filice, Shapell Homes, Chris Trubridge, Fujitsu, Wellington Corporation, Goldsmith Seeds, South Valley Imaging, Ed Seledon, J.C. Keaveney, Ms. Carita, Georgia Vaughan, Patricia
Filice, C.T. Seifert, Lori Myers-Nelson, Lisa Davis, Lesley Denise Garcia, Marie Forsell, Roger Brown, Al Pinheiro, Larry Scettrini, Lynn Noto, B. Joyce Byers, Evelyn Jensen and Karin Ajimal-Pousson.
Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas

Olin Corp. Should Pay Full Fare When it Comes to Cleaning Our Water Supply
Dear Editor,
Olin Corp. didn’t think it was “unfeasible” to pollute the water with perchlorate as they went about garnering profits from the fabrication of flares, did they?
I wonder if Olin shared those profits with the general populace?
Garlic, YES! Perchlorate, NO!!!
