Gilroy – Gilroy thrower Bobby Best will make his CCS Track and Field Finals debut this afternoon at Los Gatos High School.
As a sophomore last year, Best made it to the CCS semifinals, but didn’t have the distance to make it through to the finals. But the junior weightman secured a spot in the boys’ discus final at the big meet this year when he finished second at last Saturday’s semifinals at San Jose City College with a throw of 159-05 feet.
“He’s got a really good shot to get to the state meet,” said Gilroy head track coach Guido Zvigzne. The CIF Finals will be held in Sacramento on June 3-4.
If Best finishes in the top three, he’ll get there. Zvigzne just hopes that Best, a lineman on the GHS football team, didn’t wear himself out this week at spring football practice.
“I told him to try to rest and told the (football) coaches, ‘Make sure he doesn’t do anything too hard during practice,'” Zvigzne said.
Best owns the second-best discus mark in the section at 164-09. Pioneer’s Rolando Gomez has the top mark, 173-00.
Gilroy fans hoping to catch the lone Mustang representative at the CCS Finals will have to get to Los Gatos early – the boys’ discus is scheduled for a 4:10pm start.

Who else to watch
Khrystal Carter (V. Christian, 11) girls’ 100m, 200m
Comment: 11.62 PR in girls’ 100m is co-fastest in California. Jeneba Tarmoh (Mt. Pleasant, 10) offers a challenge in 200m.
Julie Defresne (Harbor, 12) girls’ shot put, discus
Comment: Owns top girls’ shot put mark in state (47-00) … also top 10 in discus (141-11).
Libby Jenke (Menlo School, 12) girls’ 800m
Comment: Finished behind Live Oak’s Cobbie Jones at CCS semis but her 2:07.57 earlier this season is fifth-best in the country.
Tori Tyler (Gunn, 12) girls’ 3200m
Comment: Expect a battle between Tyler (10:37.63 PR) and Ciara Viehweg of St. Ignatius – who is actually faster over 3000m.
Mark Ilarina (Riordan, 12) boys’ 100m, 200m
Comment: Fastest by about two strides in boys’ 100m (10.85) and maybe even more in 200m (21.99).
KYLE MILLS-BUNGE (St. Francis, 11) boys’ pole vault
Comment: Junior’s 15-09 at CCS Semis more than a foot better than nearest four challengers (14-06).
