Gilroy – Gavilan football and basketball player Curtis Lilly signed a letter of intent to play football with East Central University (Okla.) Tuesday.

Lilly, an Iowa native who came to Gavilan in the fall as an NAIA transfer from Northwestern College in Minneapolis, will be a punter for the Division II school next season.

The 6-foot-5, 220 pound Lilly visited the East Central campus a few weeks ago over spring break and liked what he saw.

“It’s in Oklahoma where people worship football,” Lilly said. “They love their football and they really seemed interested in me. For them to fly out a punter and give me a scholarship, especially for a D-II school, that doesn’t happen a lot. I feel very fortunate.”

Lilly, who played mainly wide receiver in high school and fulfilled punting duties out of necessity, really began concentrating on it last year.

“It was a new challenge,” the two-sport star said.

Gavilan coach John Lango was happy for Lilly.

“He’s a really, really good athlete,” Lango said. “There were opportunities for him basketball–wise. But he decided he really wanted to go ahead and play football.”
