The Gilroy Little League softball Majors All-Stars took a different route to their victory over Washington in the final game of Pool A play Wednesday in San Bernardino.
For the first time at the Western Regional Tournament, Gilroy faced an uphill climb, playing from behind through two and a half innings. However, the locals tallied runs in each of their final three at-bats in an eventual 7-3 win.
Both teams entered the contest 3-0 in round-robin action, with the survivor having the distinction of the Pool A No. 1 seed for today’s semifinals. Gilroy, as that top seed faces Alaska, which comes of of Pool B as the No. 2 seed. A berth into Friday’s championship is at stake.
On Wednesday, Gilroy trailed 2-0 into the bottom of the third but soon sliced the margin in half, notching an unearned run. After Washington grabbed a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth on an Alex Hanger RBI single, Gilroy answered back with two runs in the bottom half by way of a two-out, two-RBI single off the bat of Nikki Villanueva to chase in Maria Sandoval and Maddy Cox.
A four-run – three scoring on wild pitches – bottom of the fifth helped Gilroy’s cause and completed the comeback. Cox drove in the other run with a RBI ground out.
Gilroy’s third pitcher of the day, Alexis Conlon, pitched the final two frames and was credited with the victory.
Today’s semifinals is slated for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
