TUCSON, ARIZ.—The Gilroy Junior All Stars’ successful season has come to an end.
The team, representing Northern California, was eliminated from the Western Regional Junior Softball Tournament Monday following a 9-2 loss to Alaska.
Gilroy struck first and led 1-0 thanks to an Isabella Delgado two out double that scored Savannah Castro. But the lead was short lived.
Alaska answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning and added two more in the second to lead 5-1. It put up a four-spot in the bottom of the fifth off a two-run error, walk and a hit batter to lead 9-1.
Down to their last out, the Garlic City girls scored once more in the top of the seventh. Maggie Brinkman ran home before Alaska could pick off Christal Clark at first to end the game.
Clark led Gilroy at the plate with a 2 for 4 performance. Brinkman, Gabriella Howard and Delgado each had a hit apiece.
Howard also pitched 4.2 innings for Gilroy. She allowed four runs—three earned—on four hits, struck out two and walked three. Clark tossed 1.1 innings, allowing five runs on four hits while walking three and striking out one.
Gilroy finished with a 2-2 mark in the regional tournament. It opened with a 10-2 loss to Arizona on Thursday, but stayed alive with an 8-3 win over Montana on Friday before blanking Hawaii 11-0 Saturday.
