Industrial safety class available at Gavilan College
Anyone who is seeking a career in the construction trades should have English reading and writing proficiency and can now register for IT 115, Industrial Safety at Gavilan College.
This-three unit course provides an introduction to the construction industry. It will cover the basic skill set required to earn and entry-level position in various trades in construction.
Students will learn basic math, vocabulary, blue print reading and safety skills, along with the “soft skills” required to gain employment. The course has the option of a letter grade or credit/no credit. It is transferable to the California State University.
Spring semester classes start Jan. 30. The class meets Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9:05 p.m. on the Gavilan College Gilroy campus, room SS 205.

Get ready to revel New Year’s Eve
Tickets are now available for the a worthwhile and awesome New Year’s Eve Gala. Gilroy Relay for Life 2008 is putting on a New Year’s Eve Party to support the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life to be held at Christmas Hill Park June 7 and 8, 2008.
The event promises to be the premier party with something for every New Year’s reveler including the added benefit of supporting the year long programs to promote cancer awareness, healthy lifestyle and support resources available to cancer survivors and their families through the American Cancer Society.
This is a formal cocktail attire event, so dress up and step out for a good cause all right here at the Old City Hall, corner of Sixth and Monterey streets.
Party packages for the full evening including dinner are $75 each.
After 10 p.m., including gourmet desserts, dancing and champagne tickets are $50 each.

Holiday lights at the gardens
Visit Gilroy Gardens Holiday Lights display Friday to Sunday through Sunday and daily Wednesday through Dec. 30, from 4 to 9 p.m.

Polenta dinner benefits ICF
The Italian Catholic federation branch #. 28 presents our eighth annual Polenta Dinner prepared by chef Mario Fiorio and crew Saturday, Jan. 26, at St. Mary Church, Cullen Hall, 11 First St.
All proceeds benefit ICF charities. Take out available after 5:30 p.m. ( bring your own containers).

Coyote Creek bird walk
A series of bird walks led by Jane Haley, a National Park Service docent for 20 years and Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center (W.E.R.C) volunteer, continues Jan. 5, 2008 from 9 to 11 a.m. along Coyote Creek, north of Morgan Hill.
Participants will have an opportunity to observe migratory birds as well as discover an appreciation of local birds, their habitat and ecological importance.
Due to the terrain, these walks are not recommended for young children.
The programs are free, space is limited and reservations are required.

‘Swing Shift’ comes to Gavilan
The City of Gilroy Community Services Department presents Bisceglie’s “Swing Shift.” Please join us for this 1940s all singing, all swinging musical revue, featuring more than 95 local youth and adults. Nine public performances, opens Jan. 11 and closes Jan. 27: Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.
Performances will be held in the Gavilan College Theatre. All tickets are $12. Reserved seating. Reservations recommended.

Winning artwork will be used in the 2008 Teen Summer Reading Club publicity. Download an entry form from our Web site or pick one up and turn it into the library by Jan. 15, 2008.

La Leche League meets
La Leche League meetings emphasize the joys of breastfeeding while they inform and encourage mothers who wish to nurse their babies.
Discussions at meetings include the latest medical research as well as mothers’ personal experiences. LLL services include a lending library and 24-hour phone help for breastfeeding problems and questions. LLL of Gilroy meets the fourth Monday of every month at 10:30 a.m. Mothers with their nursing babies and mothers-to-be are welcome.
