Gilroy – The RotaCare clinic in Gilroy is desperately in need of volunteer translators (Spanish). The clinic is open Tuesday evenings, and volunteers only need to help out once or twice a month.

Development Center Enrolling for Children 2 to 5
Gilroy – The Gavilan College Child Development Center has openings for children ages 2 to 5 years old. Parents do not have to be Gavilan College students. Full-time and part-time programs are available. Participation is free for low-income families. Sliding scale care is available for the children of college students.

Eat a Pie to Benefit GHS 2008 Grad Night
Gilroy – Pies are being sold to raise money for Gilroy High School’s fundraiser for 2008 Sober Grad Night. Pies range in price from $13 to $14 (apple, pumpkin and olallieberry). Pies will be sold until Oct. 26.

Register Now for Halloween Hold ’em Tourney
Gilroy – Registration is being accepted for the third annual Halloween Hold ’em Tournament scheduled for 10am Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Gilroy Senior Center. The 15th in a series of popular No Limit Texas Hold ’em events staged by the Gilroy Community Services Department, the Halloween Hold ’em accepts four-person teams to play. Team members play at different tables. The recreational event concludes with a final table. Registration deadline is 4pm today. Proceeds benefit city of Gilroy senior, teen and youth programs. The team entry fee is $60.

Learn History Through Outhouse Archaeology
Gilroy – Mark Huddleston will illuminate Gilroy’s past through an examination of its refuse found in his outhouse excavations at noon Saturday, at the Gilroy Museum, 195 Fifth St. Learn about Gilroy’s history through the fascinating interpretation of outhouse treasures. Auditions Scheduled for ‘Swing Shift’
Gilroy – The Gilroy Community Services Department and John Bisceglie are conducting auditions for “Swing Shift.” Come be a part of this 1940s all singing, all swinging musical revue, performing at Gavilan College in January.
Auditions will be held Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St. Ages 5 to 9 at 10am, 10 to 14 at noon and 15 through adult at 2pm.

Gilroy – As part of the two school district bookfairs at Barnes & Noble, 6825 Camino Arroyo, local authors will be featured at book signings. During the Gilroy Unified School District Bookfair, meet author Karen Beaumont, from 2 to 4pm Saturday, Nov. 10; Yvonne Drew, from 5 to 6pm Saturday, Nov. 10; Dave Keane from 10am to noon, Sunday Nov. 11; and Claudia Salewske from 1 to 4pm Sunday, Nov. 11.

Release Your Inner Writer
Gilroy – The Gilroy Writing Project features three upcoming events:
n 2pm, Saturday– Linda Joy Myers, whose books “Don’t Call Me Mother: Breaking the Chain of Mother-Daughter Abandonment,” and “Becoming Whole: Writing Your Healing Story,” will help explore personal history and begin a spiritual autobiography.
n 2pm, Nov. 17 – Matilda Butler will offer tips on developing your personal memoir, then scrapbook writing and photos into a beautiful family keepsake.

Fund-raiser for Gav Sports
Gilroy – The Gavilan College baseball and softball 2007 weekend fund-raiser will be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26 and 27.
A 4-man handicap scramble golf tournament will be held Friday, Oct. 26 at Gilroy Golf Course, 2695 Hecker Pass Highway. $85 donation includes green fees, refreshments, dinner, golf cart and tee prize. Registration at 11am, shotgun start at noon and dinner at 5pm. Additional dinner tickets are $20 each.
An alumni baseball game will be held at noon Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Gavilan baseball field. $25 donation ($15 if also playing in golf tournament).

Robot Fighting in Costumes
Gilroy – The 2007 Halloween Robot Terror and Bot Costume Contest takes place Saturday Oct. 27, at Gilroy Hobby, 6901 Monterey Road. The fighting weight classes are 150-gram flea weights, 1-pound ant weights and 3-pound beetle weights .
Weigh-in starts at 10am, fighting begins at noon.
After one round of bot fighting in all weight classes there will be a costume contest for the fighting robots. Afterward, robots will fight in costumes.
Mentor a College Student
Gilroy – The Gavilan College Puente Program seeks volunteer community mentors for college students. The ideal mentor is able to communicate with college-age students, is open-minded and a good listener, and can make time in their schedule for meetings and conversations. Mentors should have earned, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree and live or work in the Gavilan College district.
Prospective mentors will be scheduled for interviews and must attend required student and mentor socials from 6 to 8pm, Oct. 26, Dec. 7, Feb. 8 and March 15; a parent/student/mentor celebration April 27; and a required mentor training.

Halloween Horse Ride at Bear Ranch
San Martin – Halloween Poker Ride Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Harvey Bear Ranch, San Martin. Lunch and prizes. Registration at 8am, costume judging at 9am, ride out at 10am, lunch and one poker hand. Cost is $25 for adults ($20 for San Martin Horsemen’s Association members) and $20 for under 12.
