Gilroy – The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association is seeking contestants for the 29th Annual Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen Pageant. Contestant applications became available Tuesday, at the Garlic Festival office, 7473 Monterey St.
Contestants are judged on personal interview, speech, talent and evening gown. In addition to the selection of Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen, scholarships will be awarded to many pageant contestants.
Applicants must be a resident of Gilroy, San Martin, Morgan Hill, Hollister, San Juan Bautista, or Aromas; a single female who has never been married and has no children; a high school graduate by June 2007; and between the ages of 18 and 24 by July 2007.
Deadline is 4:30pm, Feb. 16. The pageant is scheduled for March 31, beginning at 6pm at the Gavilan College Theater.

Family therapist talks about sex
Gilroy – South Valley Community Church will host a sex-talk seminar. A panel of marriage and family therapists will explain how to answer the “Where do babies come from?” question and explain how to support older children who have committed to abstinence until marriage.
Seminar takes place from 6:30 to 9pm, Friday, in the church auditorium. Seminar is $10 and includes dinner.

Fuzzy friends need a loving home
Gilroy – The Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter need help to find loving families for the many homeless companion animals at the shelter and in foster homes.
Visit the FOSMAS pet fairs Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5pm, at Petco-Morgan Hill (corner of Tennant and Monterey); and at Petco-Gilroy (San Ysidro Avenue north of the Gilroy Premium Outlets) where many wonderful companion animals, including cats, dogs, and rabbits will be featured.

Charity Texas Hold ‘Em tournament
Gilroy – The Super Showdown II Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament, the 10th in a series of charity events developed by the Gilroy Community Services Department, will be held at 10am, Saturday Feb. 3 at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St.
Registration for the one-day tournament begins at 2pm, today, with a deadline of 5pm, Jan. 25.
Team entry fee is $60 for each four-person team. The tournament is open to men and women at least 18 years of age. Team members will play at different tables. Proceeds from the tournament benefit youth, teen and senior programs within the Community Services Department.

Don’t miss Science Alive at Gavilan
Gilroy – This event is a hands-on science experience for students in grades 6 to 8. Students are invited to participate in a day of hands-on workshops that make science fun.
Students may select among 19 exciting workshops including A Cow’s Eye View, Astronomy, Geology, and “Help Build A Trebuchet.” The day will end with a raffle drawing and prizes.
The cost is $10 per participant, and a limited number of need-based scholarships are available. Fee includes the cost of the workshop, lunch and snacks.
The event is Feb. 10, 8am to 3pm. Participants must register in advance. Space is limited.

Parents cheer for school choice
Morgan Hill – A K-12 independent school information fair will be held Thursday, from 7 to 9pm in the Morgan Hill Community Center, El Toro Room.
Admission is free.
Five independent schools are participating to get more exposure for their schools. Staff from the schools will be available on the night of the event to answer questions from the public and share materials with interested parents.
Coyote Creek bird walk’s planned
Morgan Hill – A series of bird walks led by Jane Haley, a National Park Service docent for 20 years and Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center volunteer, began in January at Coyote Creek, north of Morgan Hill, but others are planned. for the coming months.
Bird walks also will be held Feb. 3, March 3 and March 31.
Participants will have an opportunity to observe migratory birds as well as discover an appreciation of local birds, their habitat and ecological importance.
Due to the terrain, these walks are not recommended for young children. The programs are free, space is limited and reservations are required.
