Walker wins award
Gilroy – Dispatch columnist Cynthia Walker was awarded the Lew Gardner Award for 2005 by Director of White Stag, Nathan Corona for 2005 and 2006.
Corona gave Walker the award for 2005 at White Stag Leadership Development Camp. The Lew Gardner Award honors the staff member who most exemplifies the spirit of selfless service for which the late Lew Gardner is remembered.
White Stag is a week long camp held in August in the Sierras. The program is open to all youth ages 11 to 17, and develops leadership skills in an outdoor environment.

New schedule for Caltrain riders
Gilroy – There will be slight changes to the Caltrain schedule, effective Monday, Oct. 10. Northbound trains will depart from Gilroy at 6:07am, 6:30am and 7:05am; San Martin at 6:16am, 6:39am, and 7:14am; Morgan Hill at 6:22am, 6:45am and 7:20am. Southbound trains will leave San Jose Diridon Station at 4:39pm, 6:16pm and 6:56pm.

Gilroy – The Antonio Del Buono School Violin Program is having an Enchilada Fiesta on Friday, Oct. 7. Food will be served from 4 to 7pm with a violin performance starting at 7.
The meal includes rice, beans, chips, enchiladas and a beverage. Tickets are $6 for adults in advance or $7 at the door. Child tickets are $3 in advance or $4 at the door. There will also be silent auction and raffle.

Sip, swirl and savor this weekend
Gilroy – Gilroy knows how to throw a great party and will do so again Saturday, Oct. 8 at Christmas Hill Park from 10am to 5pm.
The first Gilroy Art & Wine Festival will provide food and wine lovers with opportunities to taste great award winning wines while also enjoying specialty items from fabulous local restaurants.
Artisans, craftsman and entertainers will add to the festival fun while patrons enjoy this free of charge great Fall activity.
A highlight of this new event will be the traditional Gilroy Arts & Culture exhibit usually held at the Willey House.
Learn the basics of buying a home
Gilroy – The city of Gilroy is sponsoring a HUD-authorized workshop called “Becoming a Successful First-Time Homebuyer” Nov. 5, from 8:30am to 3pm at City Council Chambers in Gilroy City Hall.
The workshop will teach the essentials of becoming a homeowner, such as improving your credit record and working with mortgage brokers. Completion of the program results in a “Fannie Mae” certificate. The workshop is free and lunch will be provided, but advanced enrollment is required.

Auditions this weekend
Gilroy – Try-outs for the winter children’s theater production, “Wonderland Live,” are on the way. The show will feature funky hits from the ’60s and ’70s in a retelling of Alice and Wonderland.
Auditions will be held at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St., for children 5 to 18. Director John Bisceglie will provide practice lines to interested kids who sign up for auditions in advance.

How to write a
business plan
Gilroy – Good planning is the basis of any successful business start-up, and a necessity for a loan application. This workshop will lead you to focus on a marketing plan, financial projections and a strategic plan to put your business on the road to success.
The workshop will be held Monday, Oct. 10, from 6 to 9pm at the Gavilan College SBDC offices in the Dry Creek Village Center, 8351 Church St., Building E.
Registration begins at 5:45pm. The cost is $30 (includes price of workbook) payable in advance or at the door.

Monterey wins Williamson award
Monterey – Monterey County has been recognized with the Williamson Act Stewardship Award by the California Department of Conservation. The DOC honored Monterey County for using the act, which provides tax incentives to keep farm land in production, to prevent leapfrog development and preserve the area’s agricultural heritage.
