New release tackles coping with grief

Gilroy – Are you, or is anyone you know, seeking guidance through the seasons of loss and death? Saint Louise Regional Hospital is hosting a book-signing in honor of the release of “The Last Day of Winter: Secrets from the Seasons of Dying,” a new book by authors Jerry Griffin and Pam Umann.

Jerry Griffin, MD, PharmD, has been a hospice medical director as well as an emergency room physician. Pam Umann, MSW, of Gilroy, is a medical social worker who specializes in life-threatening illnesses. Umann has assisted patients in acute care hospitals, home care services and hospice agencies.

“The Last Day of Winter: Secrets from the Seasons of Dying” offers compassionate, plain answers to the practical questions that arise when one is caring for a loved one who is dying. Caring for a dying person is an emotionally draining experience for everyone.

Dealing with the suffering of dying may cause physical and mental exhaustion among the caregivers. Authors hold the reader’s hand and lead them through life’s most difficult passage.

The book signing will be held at St. Louise Regional Hospital on Thursday, Feb. 23 from 5 to 7pm in the Cafeteria. Complimentary books will be available to the first 20 attendees. Refreshments will be provided.

No PGA anytime soon

Morgan Hill – An appearance by Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh and other professional golfers at a South County tournament on the private golf course owned by electronics tycoon John Fry won’t happen anytime soon, Morgan Hill officials are reporting.

PGA officials said a tournament could be held on the course as soon as next year.

City Manager Ed Tewes, however, said he met with Fry this week and that no plans were made for the immediate future.

“They are fully aware that their current permit does not allow tournament play,” City Manager Ed Tewes said. “It would be fair to characterize their hopes as a long way down the road and not around the corner.”

Such a tournament would be a violation of the course’s agreement with the city and likely add to the tumultuous relationship between the course and its critics.

The owners of the American Institute of Mathematics, or AIM, admit negotiations are underway with the Professional Golfers Association to host a tournament at their course at the base of the foothills in east Morgan Hill. Fry and AIM partner Steve Sorenson make no secret about their desire to host pro tournaments, but would not confirm if any deal had been made yet.

San Martin resident arrested after returning to crime scene

Morgan Hill – A San Martin man was arrested after he returned to the scene of the crime with some of the stolen items.

Michael H. Dabecic, 29, was arrested Thursday at the Speedee Oil Change & Tune-Up in Tennant Station shopping center. The garage was burglarized three times within the past two weeks, said Morgan Hill Police Cmdr. Joe Sampson, most recently on Wednesday evening.

Each time, the burglar shattered a window in one of the rollup doors. Alarms were deactivated, and tools and other items were stolen, he added.

After Wednesday’s burglary, the manager of the garage was watching the surveillance video with MHPD detectives and told them he thought the suspect looked familiar.

“It turned out, this guy had worked in San Jose at another Speedee store for the same manager a year ago,” Sampson said.

But Dabecic also had recently applied for a job at the Tennant Station garage.

“One of the detectives suggested, if he had applied for a job, why not call him in for a job interview,” said Sampson. “And lo and behold, he came in for a job interview. Officers were waiting, and he was arrested.”

Sampson said Dabecic had some of the tools stolen from the garage in his vehicle, as well as CDs and a flashlight that had been stolen in the original burglary three weeks before.
