The ‘greatest generation’

Gilroy – They call the people who lived through World War II the “Greatest Generation”. Whether they served in the military or waited at home, all of them were affected in life-changing ways.

Now, the Gilroy Library is inviting anyone with experiences on the home or war fronts to share them with the community at the Wartime Memories: Remembering World War II program Saturday, April 8, at 2pm at the Gilroy Senior Center (Sixth and Hanna streets).

Look through your family treasures for letters written during World War II or a memento from that time. If you wish to participate, you can bring letters and mementos from the war and tell the story behind them and you can share your memoirs or interviews of a relative, friend or neighbor to the library. Writings can be posted throughout 2006 on the Discussion Board of the Silicon Valley Reads Web site at www.siliconvalleyreads.org or you can submit your story to the library, and we will post it for you.

In February, the library held the other program in this series called Wartime Correspondence: Letters from World War II. Members of the community shared their stories with people of all ages. One member of the audience said: “This was a truly profound experience. I was deeply touched by this program…”

Join in this profound sharing of memories and be regaled by the stories of people’s lives. The program is free and open to the public.
