Today is the last day to register or re-register to vote in the February election. Voter registration forms are available at city halls, fire stations, post offices, public libraries and most county government offices. They are also available at the registrar’s office and online at www.sccvote.org or by calling toll-free (866) 430-VOTE [8683].
Voters need re-register only to change their name, address, or party affiliation. Voters registered with a qualified political party can only vote for their specific party’s candidates for President. Voters who decline to state a party affiliation can either vote a nonpartisan ballot or request either an American Independent or Democratic partisan ballot, since those two parties have chosen to allow nonpartisan voters to vote for their presidential nominees. California’s qualified political parties are American Independent, Democratic, Green, Libertarian, Peace & Freedom and Republican.

Jeffrey Halford and the Healers come to Gilory
Acclaimed San Francisco Bay Area singer-songwriter-guitarist, Jeffrey Halford And The Healers, perform locally at The Barn in Gilroy at 7 p.m. Saturday, 4390 Hecker Pass Highway.
“I am here to place Jeffrey Halford up on the pedestal with such figures as John Fogerty, Randy Newman, Alejandro Escovedo, and John Prine – and Bob Dylan – in the pantheon of great American singer-songwriters,” wrote the late Buddy Seigal in the “OC Weekly.”
Halford was nominated in multiple categories at the recent 2007 South Bay Music Awards (“Songwriter Of The Year,” “Blues Artist/Group Of The Year,” and “Male Vocalist of The Year.” Jeffrey was also nominated in the “Best Blues Vocalist” category for the 2007 Los Angeles Music Awards.

Retail locations accepting fluorescent lamps for recycling
Four South County hardware retail shops are accepting fluorescent lamps for safe disposal through recycling as part of a countywide initiative, officials said.
Santa Clara County officials announced Monday they partnered with Pacific Gas and Electric Co. to launch a recycling campaign in part as a response to a 2006 state measure that banned disposal of fluorescent lamps in the trash.
“Fluorescent lamps contain mercury and therefore must be disposed of properly,” according to a county news release.
The drop-off locations below are for households only. Lamps including compact, straight, circular, spiral and U-bent are accepted.

South County locations to recycle fluorescent lamps include Ace Hardware of Gilroy, 1260 First St., 847-5890; leave lamps with employee at register, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. At Orchard Supply Hardware, 303 E. 10th St., 847-7767; leave lamps with customer service desk, Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Group meets to discuss water issues

Flower lovers club meets
The Morgan Hill flower Lovers Club (including Gilroy and San Martin) will meet at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6. The meeting will be held at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road.
Mayor’s Downtown Information Forum
Come and learn about the city’s plans for downtown Gilroy. What kinds of businesses are coming and which can qualify for fee waivers? What about a becoming paseo and all of those buildings that might not hold up through the next earthquake? The mayor and city staff will try to explain all of these questions and address concerns about downtown’s parking and further beautification.

Super Showdown III coming
The Super Showdown III Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday Feb. 2, 2008 at the Gilroy Senior Center.
The proceeds of this tournament will benefit senior, teen and youth programs within the City of Gilroy Community Services Department.
Teams of four will play in the tournament, with team members playing at different tables.
This recreational event concludes by 3 p.m.. A team entry fee of $60 and roster of four players may be turned into the Community Services Department, 7351 Rosanna St., through Jan. 25. The tournament is the 16th in a series of volunteer-led events which name team and individual champions.

Republicans meet to discuss issues
Republican men and women are invited to join the South Valley Republican Women Federated club for the first meeting of 2008.
Representatives and literature for the Republican Presidential candidates, information on State Propositions 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96 and 97 will be available. There will be a straw poll, the results of which will be sent to local media and the Republican Party.
Light refreshments and political discussion are included. The event takes place from 3 to 5 p.m., Saturday at 455 Mayock Road, Gilroy. The suggested donation is $5.
