The Community Agency for Resources, Advocacy and Services, a Gilroy-based nonprofit known as CARAS, will be holding its first-ever fundraiser at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in Gilroy to honor “community champions” including Assembly Member Luis Alejo, and world boxing champion and Gilroy native Robert Guerrero.
The organization, which helps support Latino families in need in Gilroy, will be recognizing six others, including Morgan Hill Police Department Chief David Swing, Gilroy Unified School District Board of Education Member Jaime Rosso and Sally Armendariz, a community activist, and three others according to a press release from CARAS.
“CARAS has advocated, along with our partners, for immigrant rights by working with MHPD Chief Swing to change their policy on impounding of unlicensed and undocumented drivers’ vehicles for (an) automatic 30 days,” reads the release. “These fees were a real financial burden on our community members.”
According to the release, CARAS still needs contributions for the fundraiser, from business sponsorship, raffle and silent auction items, food, non-alcoholic beverages and decorations.
Tickets can be purchased for $30 at the door at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the VFW Hall located at 74 West Sixth St. in Gilroy, or they can be purchased beforehand from the CARAS Office located at 8545 Monterey Road Suite A. The price of a ticket includes dinner from 6 to 7 p.m., a seat at the awards ceremony from 6 to 7 p.m., an invitation to dance between 8 and 11 p.m. and participation in a raffle and silent auction.
