Several of the group’s local lifters took first place at the Sept. 17 West Coast State Championships in Rancho Cordova.

Leading the pack was Gilroy’s Gary Stevens, 50, who took first place in his age group in both bench press and dead lift, and Hollister’s Al Totorelli, 38, who set a new dead lift state record for his age group of 622 pounds. Totorelli also held the previous record.

Those lifters that took first place automatically qualified for the World Association of Benchers and Dead Lifters (WABDL) Championships in Reno in November. However, many had already qualified for the competition with their performances at a June qualifying meet.
