Local Scene: Free meals for children; councilmember town hall

Library, schools provide meals for children

The Santa Clara County Library District has partnered with Silicon Valley YMCA and Second Harvest Food Bank of Silicon Valley to provide free grab-and-go meals this summer (including breakfast and lunch) to children under the age of 18 and their caregivers. 

Meals are available at the Gilroy Library, 350 West Sixth St., Monday through Friday from noon to 1pm while supplies last.

No registration is needed.

Other free summer meal locations are available to all children ages 18 and under at various schools through July 29, with no service between July 4-6. Participating schools are Eliot Elementary, 475 Old Gilroy St., Rod Kelley Elementary, 8755 Kern Ave., Solorsano Middle School, 7121 Grenache Way, and Brownell Middle School (no service on June 20 and July 4), 7800 Carmel St.

Breakfast is served from 8:30-9am, and lunch is from 1-1:30pm. No application or proof of income is required.

Councilmembers host town hall

Gilroy City Councilmembers Carol Marques and Dion Bracco will hold a town hall meeting on June 28 at 6pm at Old City Hall (upstairs), 7400 Monterey St.

Marques and Bracco will be the sole speakers, and residents are encouraged to attend and ask questions or state concerns. 

Both councilmembers also plan to run for reelection in November, and will be describing their platforms.

Residents reminded of fireworks reporting options

With the Fourth of July approaching, officials are reminding Gilroy residents that they may report firework violations anytime via email to [email protected] or by calling the non-emergency line at 408.846.0350.

When reporting firework violations, residents are advised to include the address and specific location of the violation.

Provide as much detail as possible, including:

• Exact location or address where fireworks are being used 

• Name of offender(s) if known or description

• Type of fireworks (aerial fireworks, firecrackers, mortars, etc.)

• Date and time or usual times of occurrence

• Attach/upload photos or videos if possible

• Indicate whether you wish to be contacted or remain anonymous 

Email reporting is not monitored 24 hours a day. Do not call 9-1-1 to report fireworks, unless it is an emergency.

Moen named to UA Dean’s List

Allaena Moen of Gilroy was named to the University of Alabama Dean’s List for Spring Semester 2022.

A total of 11,224 students enrolled during Spring Semester 2022 at the University of Alabama were named to the Dean’s List with an academic record of 3.5 (or above) or the president’s list with an academic record of 4.0 (all A’s).

Locals recognized at Gonzaga University

Gilroy residents Matthew Boxwell, Audrey Burke and Dominic William Pe Benito earned placement on the Gonzaga University Dean’s List for spring semester 2022. 

Students must earn a 3.5 to 3.84 grade point average to be listed.

Gonzaga University is a private Catholic university in Spokane, Wash.
