Gilroy Police recognizes officers

The Gilroy Police Department honored several officers during a recent event.

“Between early 2020 and 2023, we have welcomed numerous department members, made several promotions, observed incredible police work, and bid farewell to long-time team members,” the department stated in an Instagram post. “Unfortunately, due to pandemic restrictions we had not had the opportunity to provide them with the proper recognition. On February 13, 2023 we had the opportunity to finally celebrate these various milestones and accomplishments.”

Those recognized were:

• 2021 Officer of the Year: Officer Mas Yamamoto

• 2022 Officer of the Year: Officer Rene Arbizu

• Distinguished Service Award: Detective Jason Greathead

• Distinguished Service Award: Detective Rick Jenkins

• Life Saving Award: Officer Cameron Helms

Artwork sought for tequila event poster

The Latino Family Fund is searching for entries for its first-ever Tequila Tasting Poster Competition. 

Artists must be 18 and over and their artwork must include a tequila theme in 2D medium PDF format. 

Award is $500. The deadline is March 1.

The 15th annual Tequila Tasting event is scheduled for May 5 at Fortino Winery.

Gilroyan named to University of Hartford’s Dean’s List

The University of Hartford announced Elise Engquist of Gilroy has been named to the Dean’s List for Fall 2022.

The University of Hartford’s 350-acre campus alongside Connecticut’s capital city is home to 4,000 undergraduate and 1,800 graduate students representing 48 states and 45 countries.

Garcia recognized at Western New England University

Gilroy resident Dalton Garcia has been named to Western New England University’s Dean’s List for the Fall 2022 semester.

Garcia, who is working toward a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, is one of more than 660 students who achieved this mark. Students are named to the Dean’s List for achieving a semester grade point average of 3.30 or higher.

Western New England University is a private college based in Springfield, Mass.
