Parents still want flagpoles removed

DEAR EDITOR:

I cannot let another day go by without responding to the article entitled “Parents still want flagpoles removed” in the Tuesday, April 22, Dispatch. The letter was in reference to the flagpoles in front of Luigi Aprea School due to a communication issue with the District Office and Cingular Wireless last year.

First and foremost, not ALL parents want the flagpoles removed. I could not believe what I read.

Not only did Cingular Wireless allow Gilroy Unified School District out of the signed contract, they removed the internal workings (the guts, if you will), did a wonderful job putting everything back they way they found it, left the flagpoles behind AND donated an American and California flag. The article states, “Parents still weren’t happy. They complained that the flags donated by Cingular were too small.”

Are you kidding me? At this point, I am embarrassed to say I am a parent of Luigi Aprea. That articlemade our parent population look like a bunch of spoiled rotten brats.

I am here to say … not ALL parents agree with Robyn Houts. I, for one, am grateful for the beautiful addition to our school. Since some of the parents whined, we now have two bigger and better flags thanks to kindness of the VFW. Thank you, VFW, the flags are very much appreciated.

The article also states “According to Houts, the Luigi Aprea Parent Club was prepared to seek private funding if GUSD could not fund the flagpole removal.”

Unbelievable. Let me know when that meeting is going to be held! If the Parent Club has money to waste, how about putting more money directly in to the classrooms? How about providing a computer lab for grades K-3? How about the dreaded shade structure? How about not wasting the Parent Club money?

Can’t we just be happy and say thank-you? It seems like there is plenty of publicity aimed towards Luigi Aprea. It doesn’t help that SOME parents are blatantly ungrateful. There was a big stink to rip out the cell towers. Ok, we got our way … we stamped our feet long enough that it worked.

Now, just leave the flagpoles there and go fight for something worth fighting for. There must be something you could be doing that is more productive for your kids or our community.

Sheri Meskimen, Gilroy
