About 8 p.m. Thursday, a 49-year-old Hispanic male called 911 and told dispatchers he “accidentally” shot his wife in the 6400 block of Chestnut Street – between Luchessa and 10th streets – and needed directions to the hospital.
Authorities attempted to guide the unidentified man over the phone, but he ended up at the California Highway Patrol weigh station along U.S. 101, where officers and paramedics met the couple, Sgt. Jim Gillio said. The woman, who is expected to recover, received treatment on the scene and was transported to an area hospital, where she spent the weekend and Monday while officers waited to interview her.
“Our detective unit is working the case to determine if this was something accidental or more, but all the information at this point leads us to believe this was an accidental case,” Gillio said.
Police only described the gun as a medium-caliber handgun and declined to say whether the man was a registered gun owner. Police would also not say where exactly the shooting took place along the 6400 block of Chestnut Street but described the couple as being near a “family-owned business.”
The windy stretch of road at that point hosts mostly auto repair shops, storage lots and a small fueling station. Few people walked around the desolate area Monday, but two employees at an auto shop who would not give their names said they saw a “couple” police cars with their lights on searching the area Thursday night but they did not see any arrests or anything unusual. Gillio would not say whether police had arrested the husband as of Monday morning.
An employee operating a forklift Monday at a ConAgra warehouse across the street at 6401 Chestnut St. said he had heard rumors of a shooting in the area, but nothing more.
