29-year-old was driving stolen truck out of Gilroy when he was
spotted by GPD
Gilroy – Richard Torres Arteaga led Gilroy police on a high speed vehicle chase for more than 25 miles before he was arrested early Sunday morning in Watsonville.
Arteaga, 29, of Watsonville, was spotted by Gilroy Police officers driving a 1991 Ford truck about 5:45am.
The truck was reported stolen minutes earlier from in front of a home on Welburn Avenue.
According to police, the driver ignored lights and sirens, did not pull over and attempted to flee heading southbound on U.S. 101, reaching speeds of 80 to 90 mph.
Gilroy police requested assistance from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department and other outside law enforcement agencies to help apprehend Arteaga.
The pursuit ended about 6:18am on Elk Horn Road in Watsonville after the driver dumped the truck and fled on foot.
Arteaga was arrested on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle, driving with a suspended license, resisting arrest, possession of burglary tools and drug paraphernalia.
In addition, Arteaga was wanted by outside authorities on several outstanding warrants for possession of an illegal weapon, violating probation, possession of stolen property and possession of methamphetamine, and evading arrest.
